    Spring, Joy, Green things

    He has a new ladder and he is happy.

    you can smell the green, the damp moss, the earthy soil

    there are flocks of phlox

    she has to run very fast because her butterfly net is full of violets and this is a very important thing.

    you know that she is coming for you and she is going to plant those muddy paws on your crouched form as you take photos of tiny things and she is going to lick you like she is SAVING your life.

    Home.

    Life

    Today she wants to know where the edges of the sky are and if flying squirrels are more bat than squirrel and she wants to know why we cannot live forever if we stay healthy and can she sit here on my lap for as long as she likes.

    She wants to know if I heard that sound just now and what do I think it might be because she is thinking it must be an owl, or a hawk.

    Today he wants to tell me things.   He wants to explain the way the grass grows and the way his heart moves and the way a moth takes wing.  He wants to show me how he built his pirate ship and how he dreamed up a kite last night and then he spent the morning building it.

    He wants to tell me that he can smell the dampness and the green of spring and it makes him happy.

    I want to tell you how this feels.

    Jesse got into an argument with a swing and his eyebrow lost.

    but a black eye suits a pirate quite well

    Why yes, I rather like him.

     I love it all.

  • Upon Waking

    R: “I want to lay next to Daddy”
    J: “well, i want to lay with Daddy too, so
    too bad”

    R: “i waaaaaant daaaaaddy”
    J: “why don’t you want to lay next to mommy?”
    R: “i don’t know but she is NOT daddy”
    J: “with mommy laying the
    way she is, you get her front-side which is much better than daddy’s butt-side
    which is the way he is laying”

    R: “why would i want mommy’s frontside?”
    J:
    “her front-side has her arms and her squishy bits and she can talk to you”

    R:
    “also, her frontside has her face!”
    J: “yup”
    R: “i want to snuggle mommy
    then”
    J: “me too”

    Where I’m F
    rom

    I am from cotton sheets, from Campbell’s soup and toast.

    I am from the wooded floors, rough old walls, the deep dark attics.

    I am from the lilacs, the violets, the forget me nots.

    I am from canasta and red hair, from James
    and Juliet.

    I am from the hushed tones and things left unsaid.

    From the laughing ones and those who looked away.

    I am from my mother, and hers and and hers.

    I’m from New England, pot roast and gravy.

    From the way the walls fell, the fireplace revealed,
    and the way she abandoned the  church for love.

    I am from the old boxes, the rusted corn crib in the barn.  I am from the boards which ache when you walk upon them,

    I am from the attic that, in the summer heat, makes you want to disappear into the fields and run laughing until you are cool again.

  • Winter

    “‘Hear! hear!’ screamed the jay from a neighboring tree, where I had
    heard a tittering for some time, ‘winter has a concentrated and nutty
    kernel, if you know where to look for it.’”

  • Things I Keep Meaning To Tell You
    (in photographs, and words)
    ~~~~~
    one day she had a cold and so she needed extra tissues
    we have our deep and quiet days.
     some days are not so deep.
    we are happier more than we are not happy.
    And now she is five. While my heart does ache for the passing of time and the way the days pass, I am grateful because I am here with her, laughing and breathing.
    my heart beats and i am glad.
    there is no love like this love.
    Jesse has been making Origami seals, kangaroos
    butterflies
    it is all so amazing
    The stream runs by the back field and so we wander there.
    sometimes we imagine we will find gold but mostly we find moss, salamanders and ferns.
    And this is treasure enough.
    I am breathing, mostly.  It have been on a strict diet for 5 months now and have been excluding dairy, wheat, soy, some nuts, chocolate, coffee, tea, for almost three months and I am a new person. I had no idea that dairy especially, was having such a large impact on my health/energy/mood/asthma.
    So now I eat a lot of beans but I am happy.
    See how happy I am?
    This is all true, every bit.
