Like A Needle in A Catstack
The Cat
The other night I was up late felting and Nina ran by my felting goods and grabbed a thread hanging off a needle. She started playing with it and when i moved to stop her, she grabbed it and ran. Trevor tried to tackle her to grab it but she ran and SWALLOWED the needle as she hauled kitty tushie.
I kid you not.
So we called the nearest 24 hour vet and they said to keep an eye on her until morning and bring her in to our vet immediately. The vet performed surgery and they extracted it from her throat (where it was lodged!). She is doing fine now, eating and playing and doing her kitty thing.
She gets bored of me, see?
The ACTUAL needle that was inside my cat.
phew.
So tell me, what freak thing has your pet eaten?

I guess she’s lucky it wasn’t a needle felting needle, yikes!!!
nothing interesting here….paper towels and butter wrappers, they manage to come out quite easily in their own
yikes! my dog, when he was tiny (4 pounds) ate a ridiculous amount of chicken bones. i paid about $100 to the vet, who told me to feed him vaseline so everything would come out, um, smoothly. (he was fine).
Oh my goodness! She’s lucky she’s ok. Nothing too interesting swallowed by my cats, especially compaired to this story…I do scoop out a lot of hair and thread from the litterbox though.
BAD kitty. Has she exhibited suicidal tendencies before?
styrofoam. What a nightmare that was. But a felting needle? Ouch!
Ouch! Poor kitty!! I love the stickers, that’s hilarious!!
And yay – I can finally read your blog again. For some reason for awhile Firefox would quit whenever I tried to come here. I wonder if it was a particular post that finally fell off the first page? Anyway, happy to be back, I’ve missed you!
Oh my!! I’m so glad the kitty is okay!!!
My goat I believe ate one of the beautiful hair pins that you make from my hair. I was milking and felt him tug at my hair and then tug right at the location of the pin. Then I realized it was gone but couldn’t it find it anywhere near me on the ground. He seemed to be fine. Maybe I’ll find it someday in his pooh?! Yuck! He also ate a milk filter once. I guess it’s true that they say goats will eat anything.
Not my pet, but the neighbor’s dog ate my little turtle. That is a big needle for a little cat.
oh my! our lab will eat anything, and the shih tzu loves pencil erasers, we’ve never had any emergency surgery operations! my mom’s cockerspaniel ate 1 lb of truffels at christmas. she didn’t die (thank goodness) but it’s because they had to continuously pour hydrogen peroxide (!) down her throat to make her vomit. ew.
Our friends’ dog ate a sock once and had to have surgery to remove it from her stomach.
We had to take our cat Charlie to the vet for xrays for exactly the same reason – swallowed a needle. The vet was able to get it out with tweezery things while Charlie gagged and frothed. Not fun.
Oh my heavens!
Horrors! Our animals just eat squirrels or deer when they can get it. Nothing wierd here. Those needles are lethal things. I once stepped on one as a 14 year old. The docs at Boston Children’s thought it would work it’s way out and said – yes you can go ski. Once month later they were performing microscopic surgery with many doctors in the room to remove the needle that was making it’s way to my heart. No charge. maybe this is where my sewing phobia started…
I’m so glad that your cat is OK. :big-smile:
Yikes, glad the kitty is ok. We had a dog once when I was a child that ate tin foil, but that later decorated the living room carpet.
Wow. So glad she’s okay. Why would anybody want to eat a needle? Your cat’s a weirdo.
Our dog Mufassa at 6 of my silicone muffin cups. ATE them. WHOLE! They came out, we’re assuming, because he’s pooh-ing just fine, and eating like normal. It was about 3 weeks ago. Freakin’ horse dog!
I don’t think my cat has ever eaten anything weird like that. He did set his butt on fire once, though! He looooves to get into stuff, and he was sniffing out a candle I was burning while in the bath…he put himself out before I made it out of the water, but the bathroom smelled like burnt hair for a while…:)
Eek! I’m glad they were able to get it out and that it didn’t do too much damage.
Um…our dog likes to dig in the bathroom trash around a very specific time of the month. I’m sure you can guess. It’s awful. I keep the trash can up high when it’s that time now days.
Our cat is obsessed with my husbands chest hair. I don’t know what it’s about but she will lay on him and groom him for hours if he lets her.
The cat just likes birds. It seems a personal mission with her. This dog has been good, only stealing a bunch of ham fat from the trash for her puppies a while back. A previous dog ate a bowl of Hershey’s kisses once at Christmas. Made picking up after him easy for a while as the piles were easy to spot!
A long time ago I was an assistant at the 24 hour vets office and we removed many weird things from stomachs. Popsicle sticks, tampons, underpants, bones, rubber balls. Poor puppies.
oh my gosh!!!
I just took a hat pin from my dogs mouth this morning!!! We call him the vacuum, if its on the floor, he finds it. *sigh*
My cat did this exact thing two days ago, only we managed to get the needle out of her mouth before she swallowed it. She had swallowed all of the thread first.
OMG! Panic!
My dog eats everything she can get her jaws around. The end.
I’m glad she is ok. A lab we had once ate rocks.
Our dogs like to stick to the basics…you know, kitty litter, underwear, socks, bras, rolls of toilets paper…
Glad your kitty is ok! They are so dumb and oblivious sometimes, but I guess that is why we love them so much…sigh.
xo
Poor Nina! Glad she’s alright!
Our cats have eaten easter grass before. Unable to pass it completely, they walk around with green plastic grass hanging out of their behinds. I grabbed a piece of toilet paper and gave it a yank! (Gross, right?)
The things we do for our pets!
So that’s oh a $500 dollar needle now and a priceless cat right? I mean, the cat was already priceless, but the needle should be gold dipped.
Ouch!
My golden retriever eats any food in her reach when it’s left out. Actually–even when it’s not. She can get into the strangest places–which includes the high cupboards–We don’t know how she get’s up there because she’s HUGE anyway. We regulate her usual dogfood–trying to slim her down.
We’re pretty sure she’s figured out how to open the pantry because She’s eaten bags of powdered sugar, a bread-pudding birthday cake, bags of lentils, yogurt cups, bread, and several bars of 80% dark chocolate….that she found somehow–(I thought they were safe!!!) I’m just surprised she’s not dead.
Dumb silly fat dog.
Our Black Lab ate 13 DOZEN luscious, decorated cookies! I had just come home from an annual cookie swap and we were just sitting down with tea and a few cookies when he entered the room licking his lips like he just had a great meal hehehe.
He was fine though.
He has since gone on to rainbow bridge… but not from eating the cookies <<G>> What a great pooch..ahhh the stories….
Our dog swallowed a fish hook attached to a fishing pole in the garage once. Poor thing–we wondered why he was just sitting there in the garage and wouldn’t bound over to us when we entered!
I’m so glad kitty is ok!!!!
Our pitbull ate plastic twine once. I didn’t know this until, well, it’s kind of gross. It was hanging out the other end….I wont say more.
My two kitties I had – they looked up and ran then acted innocent. When I came out, they weren’t fast enough so I saw them gobbling up my burrit with VERY spicy sauce! Weirdos! One big juicy and thick burrito almost gone….
I read your entry… glad your cat is well, then I found myself running down the road after my speedy little dog because she ran out the front door as I walked through to go to my car (to get some panels I am prep-ing). Before this she ate some plant outside and got sick on the pillow in her outdoor bed.
My first cat got into the trash and ate the plastic thing torn off from around a piece of bologna….which we didn’t realize until we saw something sticking out the back…we didn’t know any better and pulled it out. Which wasn’t too fun for the freaked-out cat. :blushing:
friends dog ate a bunch of couch and another friends dog ate a BUNCH of carpet. They both needed surgery. You look gorgous by the way and I hope you have been feeling a bit better.
Whoa! Crazy kittie cat.
Our cats have had some near misses, but a friend of mine tells a story about a serious dental floss swallow that ended with her extracting it by hand from the anus of her cat. Now THAT would make an interesting home video eh?!
I’m so glad kitty is okay! :dancingcow:
Nothing lately other than placenta.
Once, we had a dog that ate used condoms. They would show up in the piles of poo in the yard.
really, really, embarrassing…
