    Thunderstorms, Berries and Children

(& more “things submerged in water”)

~We had a mother of a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon with lightning hitting the field in front of the house and knocking down trees on our road.  The power was out for 20 hours and just now came back on (it was off just long enough for all the raw milk to sour and for the refrigerator to require cleaning). Oh well, the freezer is fine and we needed the rain desperately.

it was hot but we baked cookies anyway

~Tonight we will grill some pork from a farm down the road; we know the farmer and his family and this pleases me. We will also the grill the very first peppers of the year and have a spinach salad fresh from the garden.  I imagine it will be simple and divine at the same time.

    everything is beautiful

I Hope your day was crunchy and spicy and filled with love.

  • Your eyes are the most lovely thing on this post, and EVERYTHING is beautiful here!

  • Wonderful pictures – thanks for sharing a piece of your day!

  • Your currants make me giddy. Love to all of you.

  • I love these pics!!

  • How much do I love the picture of Roo and Jesse and their bowls of berries!?!?

I think of you on your own during the summer and how you must miss Trevor.  But then there is the rest of the time when he is around 24-7.  The time he has with you and the kids when he is home (pretty much all winter-right?) is a wonderful wonderful thing.  I think it is great how you make it work.

  • Thanks..I needed that!

  • Gorgeous pictures and colors, as always. I didn’t know Trevor travelled during summer months; what does he do again? It must be hard, as I know first-hand when my husband travels. But good for you for making it work. We do too – sometimes I get fussy about it, but mostly, I accept it. There are good things in it all, especially the reunions! Enjoy your days –

  • awwww, you are so wonderful.  ;)

  • Wow. Those are just beautiful, Julie! I want to paint that radish picture! I look at those pictures of your kids and it really makes me think about how they are learning (and yearning) for everything at their own pace, and how special that really is. Your family is amazing.

  • It was a much needed rain.  I heard there was a lot of chaos caused by that storm, but my garden enjoyed it. Your strawberries look so big, ours are tiny.  We picked over two cups the other day, of course many were eaten while picking.  Do you pick enough for jam/pies, or do you also go to a you-pick farm?

  • Mwah!

    I love currants.

  • ginnute: we have enough wild strawberries for fresh eating (no preserving).  I have yet to find an organic farm in our area so for now we make do with our wild ones.  We have tons of raspberries and blackberries so I preserve those.  They are especially large this year, BTW.  We let the wild grasses grow around them and they seem to like the shade.

  • What a lovely life! I adore the radish with the heart! When I was a little girl, I used to transplant milkweed plants into our flower gardens, hoping that a monarch butterfly would lay her eggs on them. As an adult, my dad and I got to talking about this and he just laughed. He said he had wondered why all those milkweed plants kept showing up in our flower beds! How wonderful that you found a baby monarch catepillar! The strawberries look sooo good!

  • P.S. Would you mind posting your cookie recipe? Those look yummy, too. :blushing:

  • mmmm…. my garden goal next year is rasberries, blackberris and strawberry patches.  Funny, currants are not available in Michigan and the plants are not sold here and can not be shipped here by law… I wonder why?

your currant juice last year made me drool….:camera:

  • I literally feel suffocated when I look at these flowers submerged in water photos. They’re pretty though.

  • Mmmmmmm, I want to come eat at your house.

    Beautiful pictures!

  • Everything is beautiful. I agree. Particularly your two youngins with their stainless steel bowls of berries. And the daisy diving in and floating down… Love that.

I am cooking beef tonight from our farmer friends. I love their pork too. And we’ll have salad and potatoes form our farm. I’ll put out a toast to you there, eating your local meal as well. Wish we had big raspberries. wow.

  • I love the flowers in water series. :flirty:

  • So crisp!

  • Those strawberries look absolutely delicious!

  • Everything and everyone is so beautiful!

  • your posts always make me smile. reminds me that no matter what i go through, there will always be good times

  • Gorgeous
