Have you made the Yow Bing bread from that book? When I was 18 I took the train to California to meet up with vague friends and discovered Yow Bing bread at a little Chinese restaurant on Mission Street where I went with young, righteous activists from Seeds of Peace and watched as this beautiful blonde man in overalls whose name I will never know again drank soy sauce straight. When we (David, me and Simon and Linnaea) lived in Japan for a year at the New Year’s party a young Chinese student with a hot plate whipped up these amazing spring onion pancakes for snacks and they were so good and so evocative and I asked how to make them and was told by an American scholar that I could never manage such a traditional Chinese food. Which, of course, meant that I had to manage and David had Madhur Jaffrey’s book and there it was spring onion pancakes or Yow Bing bread and I made it and it was good and the cultural barrier did not keep the skill from me. It is about the kids favorite bread.
Oh my, I love this!! I think I might have to try a shot like this. I’m sure it will turn out no where near as good though. Did you use a tripod and self-timer, or is at arms length? Anyways, it’s great!!
