    Hickory Dickory Nuts

    (with a spot of craftiness)

We were thrilled to discover an old hickory tree here on our property this summer; it is especially exciting as they are highly uncommon this far north.

and now, we have hickory nuts

what would you do with ten gallons of nuts?

     A True Story

Years ago, I was a buyer for a used bookstore and helped people navigate their way through our stacks to find the subject they desired.

Once, a customer came in and said to me,

cus: “excuse me. where do you keep the books on Unix?”

    me: Eunuchs?”

cus: “yes, Unix, I need it for a reference”

me: (silently tittering) “ummm, well…we might keep books on eunuchs in anatomy and physiology”

    cus: “come again?!”

me: “I’m not sure where else we would keep them unless maybe in the human sexuality section?”

cus: (looks at me as if I am the most bizarre human he has ever seen in his life and says somewhat fiercely)” DO YOU HAVE A SECTION ON COMPUTERS?!”

me:” yes we do, let me show you…”

    cus:”thanks”

yes, you can pin a medal on me right now, for I am the master goober.

    Another True Bookstore Story

(in which Ernest Borgnine gave me a kiss on the cheek for being so helpful and I almost got fired because I had an argument with my boss afterward over whether it really happened or not.)

My boss insisted that Ernest was dead.

But Ernest and I know the truth.

  • Unix… eunuchs… *GUFFAW* — that’s the best story. I love it!

    Margo – the ex-computer-geek

  • hahaha, i would have thought the same as you. too funny.

i wonder if they realized what you were referencing them to?!

  • Funny about the computer story. My husband read it and busted out laughing.(He’s a computer geek.)

And a hickory tree! That would be so lovely to have.

  • The hat makes your boy look like a smiling pumpkin! If I had that many nuts I’d make them into flavoring and cook them into cookies and bread! Fabulous. XOXO

  • What a great hickory find,I would just eat them! Love the hats/baskets too! I know nothing about computers,I would have done the same thing!(now I’m curious about eunuchs and am wondering if I want to look the up!)

  • How do you crack ten gallons of hickory nuts?

I got a good snicker out of the eunuch unix story.  I can only imagine what the customer thought of you, but I’m sure it brightened up his day too.

  • do you eat hickory nuts?  and if so how do they taste?  i am loving the felted hats.  i yearn to make some, but i have a front-loading washer instead of a top loading and so the felting, she no worky for me.

  • ROFLMAO at “eunuchs.”  What DO you do with hickory nuts?

  • That hat rocks!!

I was almost a full semester before my highschool chemistry teacher realized that “you, too” was really U2.

  • Don’t choke on those wild hickory nuts like Euell Gibbons did!!

He IS very much alive:  http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000308/

  • Don’t feel bad. I still don’t know what Unix is. Although, thanks to you, I now know it’s NOT eunuchs. Lisa

  • Wow! That’s a lot of nuts! Wonder if they’d be good in brownies? Thanks for the grins today! I would have thought eunichs, too. Had no idea there was such a thing as Unix. Love to see the knitting…so crafty. P.S. Thanks for letting me know what you see on my site. I have no idea why *I* can’t see it upstairs. The world is full of mysteries…but I’ll bet there is an explanation and people who understand Unix would be able to figure it out…unless it’s just that the machines don’t really like me after all.

  • I’ve got to find some nuts! You can figure out lots of neat things to do with those nuts, besides putting them in coffee. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!… Those are great felted treasures. I’m going to learn to knit very soon!…. I wonder if that person ever made the eunuch connection — tee hee hee!… Why is it no one ever believes the famous person sightings. Some people just don’t have the knack for face recognition. Whenever I see a famous person face to face, my first reaction is I know you and then I wonder how do I know that person and then I’m like oh my god its…!!!! I did it for Ollie North (we smiled at each other and then I realized who he was, ack!), the guy who played Charles Winchester the III (who winked at me) and Dave Matthews (who I bumped into)… None of them have ever kissed me!!! Ernest Borgnine!!!

  • Umm, what about some nut crusts for pies, or biscotti!

I love eunichs for UNIX. One of our favorite books around here is mis-heard song lyrics “Scuse me while I kiss this guy”.

I’ve always admired hats like Jesse’s, you are making beautiful things!

  • Never tried a hickory nut, are they bitter or sweet?

  • LOL- that’s funny!

I didn’t know you could make things with hickory nuts, but I’m sure you guys will find a great use for them!

  • I’d fill one of those awesome felted baskets up with hickory nuts whilst singing hickory dickory dock.. but then I’m nuts.

and your bookstore stories were fantastic.. hilarious..
    and
thankfully we didn’t discover that Ernest was a eunich because that would be just toooo much.. even for Xanga.
    ;)

Eunichs for Unix… sounds like a really intersting group lol

    told ya I was nutty.
    ;)

  • That is funny about eunuchs and UNIX, but my guess is the nerd never even figured out what was going on.

  • LOL!!!

the knitting is divine, and im jealous. our pumpkins stayed just about gourd size, green and speckled.

could you make a flour with the nuts. add a little protein to bread maybe?

  • Ten gallons of nuts?! lol I am not sure what I would do with them but then again, I am not too crafty.

  • What a bountiful and wonderful find!  I imagine there are all kinds of crafts with hickory nuts as well.  I will keep my eyes open as I have been spending a lot of time with my craft books these days.

I LOVE YOUR BASKETS.  Just love them!  Really, really love them…I must make one kind of love them.

You are just too funny.  Even when you don’t intend to be.

  • I would eat all those nuts and then promptly end up in the hospital with some sort of obstruction. You’ll have to forgive me, I’m transcribing digestive problems in school right now.

Your knitting is beautiful. And I love the fluid curve of the stem of pumpkins. Simplistic elegance.

  • What will you do with the hickory nuts?

  • That is a LOT of nuts! I’ve got fruit trees…but no nut trees. My latest is a lime tree. I’ve got one lime this year!

  • Hickory nuts are a choice food for wild turkey, if you have turkey in your woods and you don’t intend on using the nuts yourself, plant some here and there for future trees and spread the rest out in an area the turkey (or deer) might frequent.

  • It is common knowledge that computer geeks are eunuchs.  Other wise they would be out scoping for hotties and not playing with their mother board…  gah!

I really want to try making one of you beautiful felted baskets.  ‘Cept I am so selfish, I will keep it for myself…

  • ha, ha ha ha ha ha that was fun!

  • Once found a hickory nut tree on our property and awaited the prime moment to pick them. Went to the tree and Mr. Squirrell was just romping away with the last nut. He’d cleaned the whole tree off. We couldn’t even find one on the ground!! I suppose he needed them more than we did. You should include some in your gift baskets…..maybe tied up in a bit of burlap??

That Unix story is too much. I hurt myself laughing at that one.

  • I love the hat. The Unix story cracked me up. Good thing nuts last I while, huh?

  • Hehe. I don’t have the first clue what to do with hickory nuts.

  • Great bookstore stories!

  • You make me laugh.    I would have assumed he meant eunuchs too.

  • unix…heehee…funny!

    love the`hat…

  • when I as 17 I worked in a music store in a rather urban area… A rather large um urban lady comes in to ask if we have the new “so foo” cd. I’m baffled b/c I never heard of it. I ask her to repeat the name she does. so foo. ok nope we don’t have that. sorry. (we didn’t!)

5 mins later i am being yelled at by a VERY angry urban (heh) large woman with a bellowing voice. i’m accused of racism (riiiight that’s so me) and of being a dumb white girl… oh! and lazy b/c I didn’ get off my ass to look for the cd and it as “right there” – as she points towards the huge display of the cd “SOUL FOOD”.

since I wasn’t about to be ramarking on her complete inability to use the english langauge so I had to just take it. in front of a store full of people waiting to buy christmas presents. But hey… it’s DC I should know better b/c 9 outta 10 people talk like that here.

it as one of my better moments.

  • Hay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • UNIX/eunuchs….

  • Can I just say one more time how much I love your blog? You are so utterly wonderful!

p.s. I believe you about Ernest.
