  • A Nippy Little Blog

I am watching the thermometer outside and it has been dropping by the hour.  It was 41 degrees at 7:30 and it is now 36 at 9:40 PM.

Shiver me timbers, I think our first frost is on the way.

Shoot, I am in my jammies.

It appears I am off for a flashlight, some boots and my down jacket to go harvest a few hundred tomatoes and a wheelbarrow full of peppers, eggplant, cukes, etc in the dark hours.

It won’t be pretty but it will get done.

If you come over in an hour, I’ll have cocoa on…

  • Oh yikes!! Its 57 here and that is plenty cold enough for me!! I am not looking forward to winter coming.

  • We’ve had ours covered with a tarp for going on a week now, seems to be working.  Good luck with the picking.

  • Let’s drink Cocoa “together” online then

  • the bottom shelf of my fridge is full of tomatoes.  Tomorrow will be a canning marathon.  I don’t think we will frost but my plants are dying back and I didn’t want the tomatoes to rot.  mmm…soup…

  • It’s damn cold here in MI, too.

  • I would so come help you if I could.  My goodness!  Just the thought of you out there makes me cold.  I hope you did not freeze your booty off.  Have a cozy and warm evening. (((hugs)))

  • holy moly! i hope you can salvage them all!

  • If I could get there in an hour I would be there.

  • Oh shoot..I haven’t picked tomatoes all week.

Isn’t it funny…you dream of harvesting…and when it comes, it’s the cold or the mosquitoes…or…. (-:

Harvesting with cocoa sounds wonderful, though!

RYC: These molds would be great for butter and chocolate..yes! The mold I used today is about 3 in by 2.5 inches…big servings of butter and chocolate. I think with chocolate, the mold would have to be made as slick as possible…I used cooking spray today.

GOing to Flag tomorrow (for the weekend) …can I get you anything?

  • oh so tempting! I do love chocolate and gardens!

    I’m emailing you soon btw…

  • Wow… it was in the 90′s down here!

  • I hope you got all of your harvesting done! It’s still in the 90′s here. I wish it would get cold. I’m ready for some sort of physical change to mark the passing of time.

Summer springs eternal in the south of Texas. I haven’t learned to appreciate it yet. I count the months until we can move somewhere northern with more than two seasons.

    Hot cocoa sounds devine.

  • I hardly do any canning or freezing but love what I do get to. Last year it was apple butter and applesauce and dried apples. I’m trying to stay away from “freezing” because that takes energy to store and I want the passive storage, you know? I’ve got tomatoes, lemons, and peaches now. Will have apples soon. I love eating from the yard. I have a huge braid of garlic hanging in the kitchen that will keep me supplied all year, or nearly, and the largest bulbs set aside to plant again next month. I love the stuff I can save seeds for and replant, or perennial stuff like asparagus and some herbs.

  • Wowee!!!  That’s exciting!

  • Brrrr!  I hope it doesn’t take too long.  Cocoa sounds great right about now.

  • Wow, it gets cold where you are early! Good luck with your harvest!

  • It was 34 here yesterday morning. I totally would have helped. Brought the kiddos sunggled after with cocoa! It would have been wonderful.

  • Did you do it?! I would totally come over for cocoa, if I weren’t a few hundred miles away.

  • If I could get there, I’d even help you harvest…in my jammies!

  • I gave up on my tomatoes two weeks ago, the slugs got at them.  Hope you have better luck.

  • Even that sounds like fun, Julie! Love your life!! It’s raining a chilly rain this morning – gray and fallish. Hopefully you are at least dry! Show us pictures!

  • ooooh, I hope it went well.  It was pretty darn cold here last night too!

  • We got low 40′s last night, all I could think is its too early for it to be this cold!

  • brrr! that growing season was way too short for my warm blooded taste! hope you got them all harvested.

  • Good luck!  Frost has already come here.

  • It was really chilly here this morning. Did you get the harvesting done?

  • I had to get what was left of my veggies in also.  It’s a good thing the neighbors raided my garden again or I’d never have gotten it all picked.

  • Mmmm… cocoa.  I have a thing of Abuelita in my pantry and I’m just dying for it to get cold so I can crack it open.  It’s going to be 94 today.  Of course, my mom had to point out that it’s 80 back home.  Dammit!!

  • ooo! we had cocoa last night too!

  • Brr.  I hope you got it all done!!

  • Maine is about 7 hours from where I live (and Island is a hint, to the East) and we are expecting frost too.

  • Shiver me Timbers is right, holy smokes thats too damn cold.  Hope you got all your veggies in time!  Be Blessed and for goodness sake, bundle up!

  • We’re happy as well-fed toddlers over here because the summer heat has surrendered to balmy temps in the 80′s. Yay.
You must be the best neighbor. If I lived next door, I would SO come over for cocoa. And I’d bring cinnamon muffins.

  • Dang it… I missed the harvesting fun!! *POUTS*

  • It has turned to autumn here in the nw too. the sun hides more, the ground is wetter, and the sweaters come out of boxes

  • Wow, can’t believe it’s that cold already. Hope you got your produce in in time xxxx

  • Happy almost first frost!

  • Oh wow! It is still nearly 70 here after our “cold front” last night. We topped out around 90 yesterday. I am so ready for fall. Cocoa sounds so good.

Good luck with all of the harvesting, if you still have more to do.

  • No way! It’s actually been feeling really warm to me here, lately. Like, where *is* this cold weather I keep hearing about? :)
