I’m Not the Hobbling Type
(OR:”drat this broken toe, I’ve got stuff to do!”)
Yes, I am not always good at slowing down when I need to. It is especially challenging right now as I have a multitude of foods to be canned and chores to do. I keep telling myself to listen to my body and rest but my head is running the show and so I hobble about.
Little Happy List
Russian Olive berries need to be made into juice concentrate & jam
35 lbs wild grapes will be made into jam
apples will be crushed into cider
we picked over 100 pounds of organic pears yesterday and those need to be processed as well (pear butter, nectar, canned pears)
onions need to be pulled and left out in the air for a day
broccoli needs harvesting and freezing
swiss chard, too
save thesquashand pumpkins from the EVIL squash bugs by harvesting them
(and find someone to do the stomp on the remaining bugs as I am in no shape to do so)
For those who inquired as to how I broke this digit, I could tell you that I:
broke it playing polo when my pony hit a tree while racing about
broke it when the heel on my new strappy Jimmy Choos snapped off
broke it while kicking the tires on my new Hummer
walked into a wall and caught it on the base board jutting out
Guesses?
Russian Olive berries (they taste like a cranberry-strawberry-rhubarb berry)
wild grapes
apples
my baby (cider press)
pretty little pears
Today, Jesse was a SPY.
And Roo was a joyful jumper
and butterflies hatched
and things blossomed, as they do.
Today was another ordinary, amazing day.

Mmmmm pears. that sounds SO GOOD! All those berries and grapes look HEAVENLY!! Mmmmm. The ones in the organic market never look that good. I wonder why.
haha broke your toe on a Hummer. Is it bad that I wish death on those that drive them?
PS: hope the toe feels better!!!
either #1 or #4. i’d have to see a picture of your pony to know for sure!
i covet your press.
hope that dratted toe gets better soon!
#4!!
Or wait, you do seem like the type to be wearing Jimmy Choos in your garden…
I hope it heals soon because I know you won’t slow down! BTW, what is your “baby”? (That wood contraption)
gee, that’s a tough one… 4? yeah, 4
Did I not warn you about that Hummer? I told you not to buy it! It’s Karma I tell you… karma!!!
Hugs to you and that (sorta pretty) purple toe! Go on, admit it… it’s kinda purdy. And you do like ‘um purdy!
Hey, I broke that same toe, stubbed it on our exercise bike. Same exact toe! Hugs, mama. And those pictures, that cider press, wow!
I did the same thing, and my big toe is broken. Hope yours is better quickly… you need to do some stompin.

The berries look so wonderful.
Oh, all that fruit looks delicious! Glad you had a beautiful day.
*hugs* Sorry to hear about the toe. I couldn’t get the reply to work last night to comment.
Quick question….do you make applesauce just by boiling/steaming peeled apples until they are soft and then mashing them? I want to make some with the kids this week but need to know the correct way. lol
Yes sorry about the toe…can I come live with you next summer. While I’m sure it’s a lot of hard work, I bet the fresh fruits and veggies are just amazing.
well I hope you feel better soon so you can lose the hobble. I loved all the wild fruits in the northeast. the pics are beautiful, as always.
Sorry about your toe!!! I have broke 2 of mine and that just isn’t a fun thing!!!
I kicked the baseboard on one and the bed frame on another- just walking by- go figure!
Wow. Gorgeous entry!
Sorry bout the toe.
Gardening in high heels…now that would add to the day. I hope your poor little wiggly heals soon soon soon.
Pear butter sounds wonderful! Where, oh where did you learn how to prepare and store your harvest? Please tell me it is all packed in an easy to read manual for beginning gardners.
Beautiful post. (((hugs))) to those growing kids (WOW!).
Love the pictures and comments about putting your food up. Hope the toe lets you get enough done. Hopefully you can sit with it UP at some point and maybe the spy and the jumper can cater to your every wish for a few minutes with a cup of tea and… ? Hmmm… see you could be an injured enemy agent and the spy is trying to trick you with kindness into forgetting about the other side!
You live in an absolute wonderland…amazing.
If I liked winter I would come live in your yard. I really would. b/c your house wrecks of “home” all thru it. and that is what America is missing. I just don’t like winter.
ok that made no sense… but try to make sense of it anyhow.
and how did you break that toe of your dear? it looks a wee bit painful!
Yeehaw! Tell that polo pony to watch out where it’s going next time.
Woman, you exhaust me everytime I read about all the stuff you accomplish (gardening and canning and pressing and juicing and cooking and painting and reading, and. . . . .) Truly, my head spins. Do you ever take apprentices? Teach me! Teach me! I don’t even have a broken toe and I didn’t get much done today.
Roo sure is growing fast! What a lovely little lady she is.
my feet are huge and i am, ahem, not so graceful.
i have broken them all, cept the big ones.
did you cuss? i managed not to, last one i broke, on the girls’ bunk bed slide. i said “fffffffrickenfrackinfirecracker sonova beet!”
I love your blog. It’s so inspiring, fresh and fun. Your outlook and perspective have given me a chance to evaluate my own. Thanks for the inspiration and sorry about your toe.
See, I think I always knew you were wearing fancy schmancy cfmp’s and swanning around in girly clothes eating bon bons all day. Poor toe! Hope it’s better, although as I’m remembering similarly bruised digits from being stomped on by horses, I’m thinking it’s gonna be a nuisance for a little while. Ow.
I love your wedding day pictures, and the new baby and mom and sister pics are stunners. That was the woman behind the tree, yeah? What a gorgeous baby. Do you just naturally draw that sort of gaze out of babies?
I hope your toe is better soon. I love your beautiful produce pictures. That cider press is oh so cool!
Don’t let a silly toe get in the way of all that harvest goodness.
You really don’t need all 10 do you???
I once broke my little toe opening the freezer. It was assaulted by a package of frozen english muffins. True story.
Wow. Woman of Earth, Muse of Imaging, I am hearing you roar! (-: (and yout toe just adds to the whole thing)
Wah!!!! Ok…you made it easy to guess, I think. I choose….the hummer???? Waahahaha!
(-:
Feel better, Mama! Let’s hear the rest of the story sometime!
I love your collage work and photoshop experiments and joyful, joyful Juliness! Yay!
sorry about your toe. I was just reading about someone’s experience of being at a pagan camp and breaking a finger and how they dealt with the reality of being injured…it’s (according to the text) injury to the extremity, but also to the etheric body…both require some healing…
the cider press looks to die for….sigh…
Will told me today that he wished he could be a monarch butterfly. my logical response immediately was, well, you’ll live longer as a human than you would as a butterfly…but we discussed the idea that butterfly time might be quite different that human time…he’s been monitoring the crysalises at school for over a week now…and we have many little colored butterflies up on the wall…
Ahh, my first real smile this morning. Thanks, and I hope the toe heals qickly!
Sounds like the baseboard won… Sorry

Meanwhile, all the photography and harvesting sure are keeping you busy. Not to mention everything else you do in a day. A year later, I still don’t see how you do it.
I am so sorry about your toe OUCH!!! O.K so I have at least 1000 pears.. Are you willing to share ideas on what to do with them. I have heard that pear butter is good. How do you make concentrated pear juice and save it????
I hope your better soon
Beautiful photos!
Is it time for footy pj’s already? Where did summer go?
Great pictures! I’m so jealous of your cider press.
I am often way to easily defeated. The broken toe would have had me laying on the couch and requiring room service……..well it would have had me wishing for that. You on the other hand are wishing to work. You inspire me, I read you everyday for that reason!
youch!! amazing though, how your pic of a broken toe looks beautiful!!!
Wow, that last picture is just astonishingly beautiful. Maybe if you showed that to your toe, it would feel better? It made *me* feel better. Also, the photographs of your children are pure art. And to think — you MADE those children!
So many yummy things.
Roo is just gorgeous!
Please do take care of yourself. I have the same problem though when there is so much to do. I have a question o’guru of gardening. How long do I dare let basil go before I harvest it? Mine got a late start and I want let it grow as long as I can.
Roo’s hair is getting so long. She looks so much bigger in these pics compared to her pic up top. : ) Your kids are so adorable.
I have never heard of Russian Olive Berries before. They are really gorgeous.
I hope your toe gets better quick. I’ve broken both of my big toes in the past and it is horrible, and they are just darn toes!!! Sheesh! : )
