    Oh, Baby!!!

I just wanted to post a few of these before I head back out the door for the evening.

The photo shoot went fine although I feel like I missed something; like I did well but didn’t quite “get it”.

    Not sure what that is.

But, oh the 5 day old baby smell and the baby softness and the big sister sweetness, too.

You know you are in the presence of something amazing when you are this close to one so very, very new.

  • oh julie! they’re great!
    what a beautiful little baby.

  • they’re really fantastic.  i especially love the one where she’s lying there with her leg up….really, really nice!

  • I don’t think you missed anything.  They’re all beautiful.

  • i love the thinker…[no. 4]

  • Dear God, how wonderfully amazing.

  • I think you got it! I love the three ladies together

  • I love the third one!

  • I can’t believe baby looks like she’s smiling!! These are gorgeous. She looks like big sister, too. I think you got it, mama.

  • those are so lovely.

  • I like the third – the one which symbols the potential “i am all that” future kid LOL and the one with sister – baby laughing/smiling while the sister quietly enjoys her awesome

  • She is smiling! That is so amazing! I love these. Are you close with the mother? Judging from her face, she looks like she is carrying some pain. I don’t want to be nosy/ I am just concerned about her.

  • Those are so beautiful! Did you get any showing just how tiny the baby is? That would be the only thing that I can think of as “missing”. A way of stopping a moment in time when that baby just seems so impossibly small. Other than that, I LOVE what you did take!

  • I don’t know, Julie, I think they are lovely.

Steve always says “shoot tight and crop tighter.” Try experimenting w/ cropping in really closely and see if you feel like you are “getting” that thing you felt like you missed.

    Gorgeous work.

  • Beautiful! I also really like that they are in black and white.

  • nancgoat: you are right, she had a c-section and is still in a lot of pain.

  • That third one takes my breath away.  The baby’s eyes look so soulful and searching.

I adore the shot of the two sisters.  The baby is smiling and looks so serene.  Perfect.  Absolutely perfect.

The mother looks tired and sad (still lovely though) so maybe joy is what you feel like you didn’t “get,” but that’s not something you as the photographer can make happen in a portrait.  The pictures are very true, they tell a story, and that is good.  Maybe try another shoot after she has processed the birth.

I think your work is beautiful.

  • Beloved said it all…that is EXACTLY what I felt when I looked at your shots.  You are so talented!

  • What beautiful photos, so stunning xxx

  • Oh Jules!   The last 2 especially!  Wow!

  • Those are outstanding.  You’ll be booked up for months ahead of time!  Are you going to try shooting some high school grad portraits in the spring?

I especially like #s 1, 2, and 5.    I think the only thing you miss are the spirits that baby can still see but we can’t.

  • They are so cute. She is the same woman who was oh so pregnant with her cute tummy poking from behind the tree!

  • Yeah, poor mom, I see it too.  Maybe that is what you felt was missing somehow.  I think they are absolutely gorgeous.  Will you PM me what kind of camera you use?  I have been meaning to ask for ages now and keep forgetting.  I love my little olympus but am starting to realize its limitations.

  • the one with the baby with the black backdrop is perfect. love it.

  • so very beautiful!

  • Those are wonderful!!!! I love them! You did a fabulous job and I’m sure the mom feels the same!

  • Julie, these are amazing!  I love the way you capture the beauty in everything!  What a beautiful family!

  • Those are stunning! :)

  • I want to snuggle that baby! Great photos!

  • These are lovely. If I may ask, what are you using for lighting, backgrounds, etc.? These are wonderful shots. I think the feeling of something missing may be your artistic perfectionism — but can you pinpoint what you’re not seeing in the proofs that you saw in person? Or a photo that should be more like _____________? Maybe freewriting about what you think is missing or could have been better might help you lay a finger on it and work on that for next time?

  • uncskainch: I am using natural lighting (near windows) and I am using a portable collapsible black backdrop for the backdrop with a fluffy black blanket for the floor.

I think you may be on to something with my “artistic perfectionism”: I have difficult time with new experiences and judge myself harshly.  That said, I think what is missing (in my heart) is the JOY.  Nancygoat and Beloved_Sunshine helped me to understand this.  The mama (5-6 days ago) had an unplanned emergency C-section (3rd baby) and is still recovering.

I think about the babymoon in such simple terms; it is all joyful and blissful and perfect and yet I know that it isn’t always this way.  I guess this is where my self-perfectionism comes in; I expect myself to capture joy that is NOT EVEN THERE (because of physical pain).  sigh.  I am learning.

    thanks for your insight!!

  • Beautiful shots! You are awe inspiring.

  • I don’t think you missed anything – I loved the last tow shots. And the baby is smiling – so beautiful.
