    Because I Blog 7 Days a Week

    *****

I am hiding out by the computer as I am cranky and in a bit of pain; Jesse and I were building a toy rocket for him and he pumped the pressure up while I was bent over it and the rocket smacked me in the eye. It thuds/burns but will be fine in a bit.  I won’t be posting for 2-3 days as I am heading over to a friend’s house this evening to watch her children and then I am heading to my parent’s camp in the AM for a few days.

    Juice

A word to the wise, do not attempt to make juice concentrate on your “anniversary” as you may forget the pot while it simmers on the stove and fills the house with smoke (because the kids are in bed and the love of your life is a great kisser).

We had fun anyway;  I can always find time to make juice but quiet time alone with Trev is hard to come by.

Incidentally, we met in 1986 while cooking at the same restaurant in college.  I was immediately drawn to him by his intelligence and wit and we became fast friends.  I kept busy dating less-than-ideal men and so we didn’t go out then.  Fast forward 6 years later (after keeping in touch while we both travelled) we reconnected and damn, did he seem great.  And he was and he is and so here we are, 14 years later and married for 10 of them (that anniversary is in Nov, anyone want to babysit? )

    What Are You Reading?

    *****

I’ve said this before but I will say it again, I read a lot.  I am always beginning 3-5 books while I am finishing a few others. I try and find a few 1/2 hour blocks during the day when I can read while the kids are content to play alone.  And then I read in the evening when I am not packing books.

While the days fly by and there seems to be little free time, I still manage to read what I’d like. Although, I will say it has been ages since I spent the day reading but this is the way things are with small children.

    my current reads:

  • Oh my!! I **LOVE** Geek Love!! I read that book over and over until I lost it. I’ve never found anyone else whose even read it, let alone liked it!!

  • I’d baby sit, do they let you ship kids to Florida, cargo rate??

    No..I didn’t think so.

I have to add those books to my “to read” list.

  • Have you read Kite Runner by Khaled Hoseinni?  Very good.  I’m waiting for his next book to come out.

  • well I hope you feel better!  we’ll miss you!  I love Barbara Ehrenreich, too.  havent read too much recently, been busy.

  • I read about as much as you do. I tell people who wonder how I have time, that I have time to breathe, don’t I? I read, therefore I am. Or something……

  • I got pajama pants in the top right fabric at Target last year (or Wal Mart?) They’re very comfy and one of my favorite pairs.

Have you read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon? It’ll keep you busy for awhile and if you like historical fiction you’ll love that series. Also the Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faberr (sp?) I love historical fiction.

  • Just finished THE PILOTS WIFE. Pretty good…sure you have already read that one…

  • In The Time of Butterflies is powerful—I read it after my daughter was in Dominican Republic and was with a group scheduled to meet the surviving sister.  The meeting got canceled at the last minute, but my daughter insisted I read the book and I was glad for that.  I have other favorites on your list as well.  I’ll have to look up the ones I haven’t read.  “The Disappearance” is one I’ve read enough that I wanted to own it.  It is by Genevieve Jurgensen, translated from French, and is her personal story of the loss of her children in a car accident.  It is not sensational.  It is the best self examination of grief I have ever read.

  • I loved, loved, loved Geek Love.  I don’t get to read as much or as often as I’d like.  Wennie thinks I shouldn’t.  She puts her hands, feet, body….anything she can get in front of the pages.  I am trying to break her of it by sitting on her as I desperately try to read The Historian.

Have you read the Sweet Potato Queen books by Jill Conner Brown?  They are quite a lot of fun.

Smoochies to you and your crafty self!

  • Dang… a rocket to the eye has gotta smart!  Just read “Chill Factor” by Sandra Brown…. currently reading  “Twice Kissed” by Lisa Jackson next on list is Fannie Flagg’s new book.

  • I just got done reading The street Lawyer by John Grisham.

And a good book to recommend.. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett – very good book.

    Christina

  • I just read Oracle Night…it was pretty interesting.

  • Those are great reading recommendations.
I’ll babysit. Bring them to Nova Scotia.

  • Have a great time away! :) Although, reading here, I would never want to leave your abode! Teehee! ;)

I hope your eye feels well… and the fabrics are to die for! … I am a vintage fabric junkie! Oh yeah! Micheal Miller! WooWoo Baby! ;)

Save the Juice or love on the hubby???… HUBBYYYY! Dang it, it IS hard to find down time! I would have let the house fill with smoke up to the point of any serious damage hehe!

I am reading The end of homework =) … Idle weeds, Lay that trumpet in our hands, While I was gone, Ain’t no river, and A divine wind.

    :)

    Kimberly

  • I am jealous of all the reading.  I am.  I’m finding it hard to read an article in TIME these days.  I’ll definitely be putting Geek Love on my list for my next visit to the library.

    Enjoy your getaway!

  • Oh goodness, I hope your eye feels better soon.  We have a rocket that you pump with your foot and I’m always amazed at the force that propels that rocket even when it’s a tiny person stepping on the pump.

What wonderful book recommendations.  I’m going to email this to myself so I can check some of these out.  I just finished Ahab’s wife.  I loved The Lovely Bones and Memoirs of a Geisha.  I don’t think i’ve read any of the others on that list.

Those pajamas will be so cute.  :)

  • I have two books that made me think of you.  One is “Prairie Home Cooking” – it’s a recipe book combined with history, uses wild foods, has canning recipes, and some fantastic stories.  It’s a big, gorgeous book.  I also recommend “Roots, Shoots, Buckets, and Boots”.  It has very whimsical gardening ideas like sunflower houses, night gardens, etc.  Also a beautiful book.

  • I LOVE the House on Mango Street. Another favorite by her is Woman Hollering Creek, especially the sweater story.

  • Better Off! flipping the switch on technology – by Eric Brende

    I love that book!!!

Little house on the Praire trilogy – I could read these again and again and again.

Jan Eyre – who doesn’t love this?

  • Happy “anniversary!” I met my husband in college, too. I was housemates with a friend of his and I also dated some less than ideal men before I finally decided to try him out. Tee-hee. Probably was a good thing to get some practice before going for the real thing. That fabric looks like a lot of fun– do show pics of the works in progress. I am currently reading Pope Joan and I am really enjoying it and Kohn’s Punished by Rewards. Before that, I read Frank Herbert’s Dune and loved it. I enjoyed Written on the Body. Love all by Winterson!

  • Don’t forget my PJ’s!!!    ; )

  • I’ll miss my daily “Two Small Birds” fix!  I usually start my day by checking out your blog.  It invariably puts me in a good mood   Thanks for being such a positive inspiration.

As for book recommendations, here are a few books that I really enjoyed:

–The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

–Into the Wild by John Krakauer

–Fifty Acres and a Poodle AND Under the Same Moon by Jeanne Marie Laskas

–Wild Swans:  Three Daughter of China by Jung Chang

–Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder

–Just about anything by Barbara Kingsolver–although I really enjoyed Small Wonders, The Prodigal Summer and The Poisonwood Bible

–For a quick, quasi-mindless but thoroughly enjoyable read, I have enjoyed most of Nicolas Evans’ books–particularly The Horse Whisperer, The Loop and The Smoke Jumper.

Have Fun on vacation!  We’ll miss you.

  • Enjoy your trip! I am always reading several books at at time, too, and have some I started awhile ago, that I need to finish! I’d recommend Dreams Underfoot by Charles DeLint, short stories. I just got another DeLint book last night, and some C.S. Lewis, but can’t remember the title of the DeLint right now…The Little Wood? Not sure!

  • The Little Country by Charles DeLint is the name of the new book I got. I have read it before, but we were passing copies around. When I found this, I wanted a copy to keep and reread. DeLint is always good for rereads.

  • Aw, you and your man are so cute!

I must read “Geek Love.” The title alone has hooked me.

  • Alright, if you find a way to get me out there, I would be more than happy to babysit them – they seem like great fun loving kids! They get it from their momma! hehe

    –Cinna

  • Those materials are GREAT!! I prefer not to mention what I am reading, its too embarrassing!(and I am enjoying it!)

  • A good short novel I just read was INTO THE FOREST by Jean Hegland. The two sisters are unschooled and one of them even has an unassisted birth in the forest. I highly rec. it!!!  = )

  • I just finished reading everything bu Augusten Burrows

    Running with scissors

    Dry

    Magical Thinking

    Sellevision

  • That fabric is beautiful!

  • Here’s what I’m reading (besides textbooks).

  • I also greatly enjoyed The Time Traveler’s Wife (a novel).

  • I am a non-fic junkie.  “Plan B” is great.  “Fast Food Nation” and “Laurel’s Kitchen” rank up there in my all time favs…

    be healed!

  • Currently: The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherford. Next up:Larry’s APrty by Carol Shields. I have about 15 other books to read, but the order in which I will read them keeps changing, depending on what lovely bargains I can find.

  • We’ve read and enjoyed many of the same books. My current favorite is “Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism.” For less heavy reading, I really enjoyed “What is Mine” (sorry, can’t remember the author, a Norwegian) and “Cesar’s Way”, about dogs. Also most journals by May Sarton.

  • I’m currently reading Kinky Friedman’s “Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned”. I saw it at the thrift store for 50 cents, so I got it, unsure if I’d like it or not. It’s not too bad, but not something I’d usually pick out.

I have been reading a ton of how-to and do-it-yourself books lately. I’m addicted to them.

  • Oh, I hope you feel better soon, eye injuries are NO fun.  Congrats to you and Trevor.  Be Blessed

  • I love that you and your hubby are so much in love. Have a good visit.

  • Hello, Amazing Mama.

Just picked up a goodie. It’s called Ask and it is Given, by Esther and Jerry Hicks.

Also found Take Off Your Glasses And See, by Jacob Liberman.

    Ahab’s Wife was divine. (-:

  • I hope your eye is better by now. How horribly painful!

So, you make pjs too?  Where do your talents end?

Thanks for sharing your reading list.  I am taking notes  I have only read a few of these and I love adding to my book list.  Two of my favorites are The Mists of Avalon and The Moon Under Her Feet.
