    Wild Edibles And Birthdays

    (and Jesse Wears A Tie!!)

It is Trevor’s 39th birthday today; he slept in until 10:30 and we have spent a quiet afternoon together.  The house is relatively clean and the cake is baked.  He has requested pizza for dinner and this is what he shall have.

After dinner, I will give him this:

L.L. Bean Light Stuff Tent #2

    Light Stuff Tent

He has wanted something very light and small so he can carry it when he hikes/canoes in for long periods of time in the woods.  At just over 5 pounds, this should do the trick.

Happy Birthday to a man who just keeps on getting better with age!!!

As you know, I get very excited about foraging for wild edibles; it pleases me to make use of these growing things and appeals to the adventuress in me.  However, I also get excited about the concept of eating invasive species as they are not only delicious and cost-effective but doing this helps to eradicate non-native plants.

Japanese Knotweed is one of these plants; it is INVASIVE and aggressive and nearly impossible to eradicate.  However, one can help by cutting and cutting and cutting the beds you have (3 times a year, minimum).  The knotweed is edible and very similar to rhubarb. Early in the spring/summer the tiny stalks can be cooked and eaten like asparagus. This time of year, they can be peeled, cut up and cooked like you would rhubarb.

    Today I am making a blackberry-knotweed sauce

Here’s a link on eating invasives in my area

and I’ll be using the berries from the highly invasive Russian Olive for wine, jam and juice in 2-3 weeks from now

Incidentally, you can add Euell Gibbons to my list of older men who just got hotter and hotter as they aged

(although he was a smoker, not the hottest quality in my book)

  • That Jesse is SUCH a fashion plate!

  • I Jesse… but I’m a sucker for a man in a tie.

  • Wow, you are so creative and natural. I wouldn’t even know where to start with all the plants and herbs!! I didn’t even know most plants only last one season! Everytime I see the different concoctions you make and can, it all looks soooo good and I envy your knowledge and ability with nature.

  • My day has been quiet and nice

  • Oh my gosh! Jesse is so cute in clothes! (Not that he isn’t cute other times as well, just that I don’t see him this way often). Happy Birthday to Trevor. My day has been mostly unpleasant, but I’m working on improving it.

  • Hmmm, makes me desire even more to escape the concrete jungle of my city… Oh yes… you always inspire me to look and learn of where we will go. :)

  • I think we’ve got that Japanese knotweed around here too.  There is a similar plant around here too, similar stem and start, but the flower looks different.  I haven’t tried to eat it.  It seems to get transferred with fill dirt.

  • Yes, I too love Jesse in a tie. Fabulous! And you can totally join my rag tag team in the event of an invasion. See silly hypothetical of today’s post…

  • Happy Birthday, Trevor!!

    You are so resourceful.

I the picture of Jesse in the tie.  What a handsome guy!

  • Visiting your blog IS like visiting your home.  You are so hospitable and wise. The idea of foraging for wild edibles is really fascinating. I’ve never seen the inside (if that is what it is?) of milkweed before. How do you harvest all of this stuff and make it taste yummy? I’m just amazed.

The tent is super cool too. Happy Birthday to your husband.

  • You must be the only one who ever finishes my novels  heh.  Thanks :)

    happy birthday Trevor

  • That’s fascinating about the invasives.  I’ll have to see what’s available around here.  Thanks for the links.

  • My day has been contemplative, thanks.

I don’t think there is any place I can harvest native edibles nearby. Unless I find someone who owns some land who would give me permission.

  • I have bookmarked and begun to read those foraging links. I’m so afraid to try it around here though, everyone puts so much crap on their lawns and there isn’t much space that I could consider guarenteed nontoxic. Grrrr…
