    Are chokecherries like regular cherries?
Can you eat them off the trees?
That juice is a beautiful color!

  • As always, I am so envious.

  • Wonderful photos as always! I’ve got the same questions as spinksy – I’ve never heard of chokecherries, but they look tasty!!!!

  • Your photography is so beautiful… I suspect that the photo shoot is going to be as beautiful. I mean just look at that cutie at the top of your post. And I swear… your garden is going to be my goal… No, not that I’m comin’ up there to raid it but I want a place where I can have such a garden.

  • Yeah for pregnant woman pictures. They always look so cute.

  • she’s so cute :) and what are chokecherries? i so wish i lived where you do, i crave your way of life so very much. it’s so beautiful.

and i cannot wait to see this photo shoot. i think preg bellies are one of the most beautiful sites in this world.

  • chokecherries are tiny cheeries that live on tall bushes/trees.  The are slightly larger than a blueberry and VERY TART (hence the term “choke” cherry).  So you could eat them raw (minus the seed/stone which is toxic) but it’s not worth it.

I make the juice by lightly crushing the berries and adding water and simmering for 1/2 hour or so until it’s all pulpy and the seeds are loose. Then I strain it finely and bring it back to a boil in order to add sweetener.

    ta da.

  • Yep…dirty and purdy!

Best wishes on the pregnancy shoot!!! Yay Julie!!!!!

  • Gorgeousness all around.

  • i would love to try that juice! send me some haha :)

  • do you get seeds from johnny’s up there? i so wanted purple carrots!

  • Steve was just talking about how he ate chokecherries and crapapples when he was a little kid despite the dire warnings he received.  I suppose he lived so it must be okay.

She is so very cute.  I love when the kidlets get dirty.

  • Alright,I wnt to know where you have learned to do all these things(like gathering wild things and knowing what is safe to eat!)I thought I had chokeberries which turned out to be some poison thing! If I ever had to live on a deserted island,I want YOU with me!

  • Fabulous! And look at that harvest. I am impressed!

    What are chokecherries?

    Oh, nevermind. I can google.

  • our beans are in too and I just thinned carrots as well. do you have as many mosquitoes as we do? when I went out to put out compost this morning, I could barely open my eyes – they were all over! I have little tomatoes and squash…and lettuce…if only I could get rid of the grass that grows so fast!

  • You are such a talented photographer.  I sincerely mean that! :)

  • Love, LOVE that first photo.  Roo is just gorgeous!

  • Cute cute cute!  Congrats on your first client!

  • B-E-A utiful! :D

  • I always say, a dirty kid is having all kinds of fun!! Mine are never clean,
lord knows I try. Good luck tomorrow.

  • Oh, girl! First off, your kids are sooooo cute. Secondly, what a photographer you are! I’m sure the preggers shots will be lovely, as you can’t seem to take a poor picture. Thirdly, I never have liked juices, except ocasionally cranberry juice in large amounts upon craving it- happens at least once a year; however, looking at the fresh juices your garden and you have produced makes me THIRSTY and greedy. Yum, your fruits and veggies look scrumptious! I can’t even keep houseplants alive here in the desert, so I’m impressed and in awe of your green thumb.
LASTLY, I have to tell you that you should be making and selling greeting cards. You have SUCH an artist’s eye.

  • yay yay yay to everything! the pictures, the harvest, the book sales, the client! you go girl!

  • Lovely Roo .  I need to take a gardening/preserving/gathering/canning intensive course from you or something.  I aspire to do what you’re doing someday.   In addition to beekeeping, chicken raising, goat rearing and becoming a Naturalist/Artist-I don’t want much do I?-LOL!

  • Dirty Gertie SURE IS PURDY!  So sweet that little angel is.  Yummy Choke Cherries, I Love em so much.  One of my sweetest memories is pickin choke cherries and making jelly with my mama!  Sounds like you are getting so much good stuff from your garden.  Thanks to the Earth which gives these things, each for us in it’s own way, That our bodies may grow strong and straight, Blessed by the things we eat today.  So Shall It Be.

  • just wanted to say hello my friend:) beautiful pics…
applauding your venture into photography, you are Great!

  • Your little girl is a doll. Are you really the domestic goddess you seem to be? Your produce is amazing.

  • Well I am sure i will NEVER make it all through your blog, But what I have seen (back as far as May) I am truly impressed. I love your outlook, your works of art. You really open it all up to let people learn about you and your kids. Great Job Mama!!!

  • Wonderful pictures! I’d never really heard much about chokecherries before. We just got back from vacation, and we hiked through a state park that had signs that told what the Ojibwe lived off of from the forest. Chokecherries was one of the items listed, so my son and I looked for them along the trail. We thought we spotted some, but who knows…  :)

  • What kind of camera do you use? Your pics are always amazing! I too envy your life….so much beauty. Your children will having amazing memories.
