    Violets, Life

    (the usual)

This morning we went out and gathered over 1/2 lb of violet blossoms to make candied violets and violet syrup.

to make the syrup you pour 2 cups boiling water over 1/2 lb of violet blossoms and let steep overnight until it is deep purple.  Then mix the liquid with 2 cups honey or maple syrup and you have a gorgeous sweet liquid!

    *****

Roo had a rough morning and looked like she had won a battle with a bear

(in reality she lost a battle with some blackflies)

    This afternoon: polyurethane

My camera arrived mid-afternoon and we had to make an EMERGENCY run to the photo store as I had no CF card!

    Here are some beginner shots

  • Drats, I can’t see the video.    I can imagine the popping, the laughing, the crunching under foot.  Too fun.

    Floor looks fab.

    Enjoy the camera.  :sunny:

  • Yeah, your camera came! The violets are beautiful! I’ve heard of violet jelly, and candied violets, but not violet syrup…very cool! Hope Roo doesn’t itch! You have gotten a lot done on your floors! I can never see the videos, either, but a friend and I popped popcorn without a lid once. ;)

  • You are a nut!  Your kids are going to have sooooo many fond memories of their super fun mom!  You are so joyful.  It really is beautiful.

Thanks for the violet syrup directions!

Have fun with your new camera!!!

  • mmm candied violets. I can’t wait to try the syrup.

Poor Roo. Her little face looks awful.

    The floor looks great!!!!

  • I love jesse’s attitude! In the middle of pocorn mayhem he shouts “I got one” and licks it out of the pot lid. Victory!

  • Your floor looks fantastic! Fabulous! Outstanding! Will you come out here and do mine? :)

Violet syrup sounds delicious. I’ve only eaten them on salads.

Hurray for a new camera! What are you doing with the old one?

  • You are the coolest mom ever!

  • Chikngirl: I’m keeping it as a back-up in case the new one ends up in the shop.

kind of like a digital security blanket…

  • Yay for the new camera!!  My sister is keeping their old one as well.  The old one is a little more portable and better for places like the beach where my sister would just worry about wrecking the Rebel.

We don’t have a dog.  And the cat won’t eat popcorn.  Maybe if I slathered it in butter.

  • Poor Roo!
I can empathize as I have a hard time with insect bites, too.
Candied violets! The pics are divine!

  • Awww poor Roo! Those things really are nasty huh? I don’t think that we get blackflies here….or if we do, we are never bothered by them. :(

And the violet syrup sounds heavenly! Never had it before but that is definitely something that I am willing to try.

Awesome new pics! You are going to have way too much fun with that camera! I can tell. lol

  • candied violets?!?! ooooooh. you always post the yummiest and unheard of things (for me at least). that must be delicious!!! your floors look amazing. and your kids are sooooo damn cute!

  • I think J favors his pa in that pic.

I wonder if I am the only one who thought ‘cervical fluid card’?

    I slay me, truly.

  • Poor girl,  those flies are nasty.   I really love how the floor turned out.  It looks just beautiful.  Trapolin watched you pop the corn twice.  Now he wants to try.

  • LOve the floor and the popcorn!!  I will do that with the boys soon they would love it!!! And it would get me to sweep my floor….

  • :coolman: Violet Syrup?!  Now I am curious!  Am in middle of preparing for a garden so tell me more about the edible violet… Like maybe which are edible?  I don’t want to kill anyone :spinning:  Been wanting to get into those earthy stuff and just finally have bits of soil area and a cute little plot to work into.

Poor Roo!!! No Fun but the Popcorn sure looked like a  one – Smart boy, giving up on trying to put the top on then just using it to try to catch the pops instead :goodjob:

  • *violet syrup*

sounds like something FAIRIES might eat !!!!!

you have a wonderful FUN life ;o)

  • fiddle heads, violet syrup and candied blossoms?  You do live in a magical place!

    Jess is so handsome!  (((hugs)))

  • I am GREEN over the VIOLETS! I’ve always wanted to do that. I’ve also always wanted to make dandelion wine. Have you done that? Why did you steal my would-be life?

    Polyurethane (cough cough.)

Poor blackfly bitten baby. And did she perhaps win the round with the chocolate I see around her mouth?

  • Yummy,I will see how many violets we can find,I am not having any luck finding enough long, fresh pine needles to try pine jelly so maybe we can do this!

    Poor Roo with the flies.:heartbeat:

    The floor is looking GREAT!!

YOUR NEW CAMERA IS HERE, YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kali_Mama: that was molasses and perhaps that is why the blackflies found her so scrumptious? hmmm

    bad mommy, bad mommy!

    Dandelion wine is next!!!!

  • I wonder if you could make violet wine??

    Are blackflies bad?

  • are they bad?!?!

    bwahahahaha….

yes, they are very, very bad.:wha::mad:

  • Violet syrups….just what my son William would shrink away from! he’s in a fussy food phase…for instance, my dh’s grandfather cut this beautiful rhubarb from his garden for us and I made a strawberry/rhubarb syrup that night…

Will had told me he wouldn’t eat anything with rhubarb in it. well, I left it out to cool on the kitchen table and he and his little brother discovered it thinking it was simply strawberry sauce – for some reason, he had forgotten that I had the rhubarb…

he’s dipping his fingers in it with glee and enthusiastically stirring it into vanilla ben and jerry’s happy as a clam…as he’s scraping away at the dish, I tell him, that I was surprised that he actually liked the rhubarb…and he was shocked!

he did like it. and he was embarassed. I’ll ask him about violets tonight…

  • oh I hope roo’s bites heal quickly. violet syrup sounds fun.

and your floor turned out great!

  • :sunny: Floor looks GREAT!

  • :sunny:The floors are PERFECT!:sunny:

The violet sryup is above all things, beautiful… BEAUTIFUL!

    And the new camera! CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS!

You deserved a wonderful camera, the best, to store your life, your family on paper – forever!!!

I know I am blessed with your wonderful journals.

    K~

  • Poor little Roo!  I hope she feels better soon.  The floor looks great.  Your laugh is contagious!  Fun with popcorn.  blessed be

  • Your kids are beautiful :)

I am a pretty adventurous cook (and baker as well), but I cannot fathom for the life of me what I’d do with either candied violets or violet syrup. But I am sure it would be great fun to make.

  • Wow, I had no idea you could eat violets, that’s really cool. And I can’t see the video, but I’m sure much fun was had by all. Your floor looks awesome!! :goodjob:

  • Beautiful floor!

  • Ooooo, I’m in love with that color (purple).

I had no idea the blackflies could do that! So they’re like mosquitos?

    Floor looks wonderful!

  • the violets are beautiful.  what a lovely day.
