Self Portrait Tuesday and A Response to

     Refrigerator Hysteria Excitement

    *****

    The Material:

We used fabric paint in tubes; it was drying up and I was getting ready to pitch it when we discovered it actually had some life left.

    The Method:

Head, shoulders, knees and toes.  Roo did the bottom and I did the top half

(thank you, thank you very much).

    The Truth:

The truth (which I neglected to reveal) is that we are getting another fridge in the next month and this 24 year old one is on it’s way OUT!  Although I have let them fingerpaint on the fridge in the past (with regular fingerpaints) and it does wipe off. This is not the end of appliance art in this house.

    Bonus:

In my hyper-motivated-to-save-energy research frenzy these last few weeks, I found a State program that replaces old, energy-sucking refrigerators for low-income folks.  And, lucky for us, our fridge SUCKS (and we are low-income)!!!  Wahoo! They came and ran a test and the beast uses 1400-1500 KW Hours per year. A new energy efficient one only uses 400 kw hours per year.

How great is that?  Where there is a will, there is a way.

  • Thats AWESOME about the fridge!! i’ve been looking for government programs for converting to solar engery, since i can’t afford to convert it on my own. I would LOVE to say good bye to my energy bill, that’s for sure. and I heart the earth, so anything i can do to make it better would be nice.

  • Your  so great!!!!!!

  • Ouch! That looks like it hurts.

Hurray for a new fridge! That is awesome!

  • I’m thinking about getting a big white canvas and just let the kids go at it. THanks for the great idea!

  • cool. i wish illinois had such programs. that rocks!

  • Yay, That Rocks, you deserve to get a little break and a new improved energy saving fridge!  I Love the self-portrait, what a nut.  You make me laugh!  Blessings of Light, Lj

  • That’s awesome. How did you manage that program? Google?? I’m very curious about this. Our electric bill is outrageous.

    That’s a great self portrait. You’re not a fool, you’re just silly!

  • Very cool news about the fridge! Of course, a plain old white one will never fit in at your house. I’m sure you’ll let the little artists christen it and give it some color!

  • Very purty!  You and the fridge. That’s great that you’re able to get a more efficient one.

  • That is great news on the fridge front.

  • HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

    I’m lovin’ that picture!!!!!!

  • Wow I am so happy to know such programs exist.I may start some research myself.

  • I bet you’d get a pretty penny if you put that fridge on ebay; ) Love that self-portrait! Trying to picture how you captured it.

Oh Julie!!! So fantastic! You are giving me ideas…I’m repainting our kitchen cabinets next….

It’s really stunning! It will be quite the conversation piece! And as you glance at it as you open the fridge door, it might make you feel crazy enough to…to…..

Sweeten your coffee with maple syrup!!!! Or pour extra chocolate fidge on your ice cream!

(thanks for missing me, btw. I posted my self portrait for the day. (-:)

  • Oh how wonderful!!!!

  • Woot!  I love the pic!  I need to follow the rules… am I foolish for smiling at 5 a.m.?

  • Hey, you snuck into my “class” on face smooshing!  Love the picture!!!

Your new fridge sounds wonderful.  What a great program.

  • Now that your fridge looks so pretty you’ll probably be sad to part with it.  Great news about getting a more efficient fridge.  :)   A clean slate for more refrigerator art.

     Love the portrait.  :)

  • I love the fridge…and your picture.

  • Suddenly I am transported to Raffi: Tete, epaulets, je something et pied . Head and shoulders, knees and feet, knees and feet.  What a great send off for the old fridge.  Though it could still do service as a very funky root cellar! Blessings abound

  • congrats on the new fridge, we did the same a while back, our old one was sucking the juice for sure LOL it was truly, avocado green, which i liked…the usage of juice, not so much.
i wish we had programs like you have…awesome…i hope you get the solar, etc…how Great.

  • i’ve been reading your xanga for a while now, but i’ve never left a comment before. (i hope that doesn’t make me sound like a stalker. i swear i’m not one.)
i typed in (what i thought was) the URL to your page, and when xanga said that the site was shut down, i nearly had a heart attack.
i am a sixteen year old girl living in upper-middle to lower-upper class suburbia in southern california. i go to a high school with a tech/ib program that is filled with geniuses. i suffer from depression due to a chemical imbalance in my brain (or so my shrink says).
but this is all beside the point.
the point is that i think your posts are extremely inspirational. whenever i feel like i`m at my lowest point, i visit this site and read what you have to say, or let the pictures do the talking.
(by the way.. the pictures of your property are amazing.)
you and your husband are raising your children in a way that i could only ever have dreamed of.
i know that when they are older, they will appreciate all that you have done for them, as well as all of the lessons that you have taught them.

  • i hope i didn`t make it sound like my parents are horrible in the previous comment. i had a wonderful childhood. they are amazing people, and we love each other very much (most days).
–i think i’m finally done ranting.

  • here’s fridge art!!! maybe there should be a painting happening at the dump of all juice sucking avocado green fridges. better as canvas than life drainers…

  • im just a random passer by. i hope you dont mind me subscribing. have a nice day :) <3 jessica

  • Oh how awesome is that!? Love love love when good things happen to good people! Glad you will saving about 1000k per year! Wooo Hooooooooo!
