  • Winter

    **************

I could tell you about the cold. I could tell you that it has been near zero and the air takes small nips out of your skin. But I would rather tell you about the way the snow is landing on the skeletons of summer; how the hydrangeas are shrouded in the loveliest of ways

and the other plants, (the ones which provide the background in summer and are rarely noticed) I want to tell you how achingly beautiful they are now

I need to tell you how they are reaching up, this very moment to be embraced by snow. I am surrounded by those who hunger for spring, their bones already tired. But I need more than anything to tell you that in the morning there are blackberries,  rescued from the freezer’s depths and there is maple syrup from our treesand there are pancakes, warm on the woodstove and the ice lays feathers upon my window just so

    And this is enough.

“With winter will come a new earth and seasonal smell, fierce and keen and very real,  the smell of snow”

  • I love winter, and with snow, it’s even easy to make the towers of dog poop in the back yard look lovely.  Unfortunately, all we’ve had this year has been a little ice, and then drought.

Wennie is wearing the little cammo pants with the bright pink striped shirt.  She looks so cute and arty in it!

    ((hugs))

  • *sigh*  I miss the snow.  We’ve had near record high temps for this winter, thus not a lot of snow. I even bought a pair of snow boots (waterproof w/faux fur inside) in hopes of using them.

The colors of the plants are the same color as scortched bones.

  • Oh how I miss jack frost’s paintings on the thin windows!  So lovely.  Thanks for sharing this.  Funny, now I miss snow, when I lived in the northeast I always had a baby too small to go out and play so I hated it.

We have a record going now, here in  AZ- 104 days without rain.

  • hi. i like ur site its nice sweet and simple ^.^. did u take the pictures that are in your entry?

  • You should write a book, pictures and all. I love your blog, it’s very inspiring. I love how you include so many pictures. There just isn’t quite the same effect without pictures.

  • your icy windows are beautiful! It never gets that cold here. :(

  • It’s so lovely.  Thanks.  I needed this.  :)

  • We’ve had it mild so far but the snow has hit this past week and it looks like it is staying.

  • That’s what it looks like right now – in Northern Ontario. We got over forty centimeters of snow last night, and enjoying every minute of it ;)

  • Beautiful post. I love this: the way the snow is landing on the skeletons of summer.  I don’t love it  enough to move back to snowy weather though ;)   I do wish we lived near each other, so we could have tea and I could ad you to my interesting persons post.

And don’t feel bad about asking about the painting.  The not source citing was eating at my conscience like no tomorrow!

  • Gorgeous shots, especially the last one. But I am still more than ready for spring! lol I just don’t think that I am eskimo at heart enough for a cold climate.

  • I’m living vicariously through your snow pictures! It was in the 60′s here today. what happened to our winter???

  • Beautiful!  I love the photo of the snow crystals on the window.  Your words make me wish it would snow here.  We have had lots of 40′, 50′s and so 60′s – strange and scary.  I won’t get started on global warming :) .  Your photos remind me of how it SHOULD be.

  • I miss snow… we just have RAIN and things MOLD and get ALGAE-ish. I need to try and find the beauty…

  • Thanks for reminding me to see the beauty hidden in the frigid weather. Your posts are always so beautiful.

  • THAT is cool.

Thanks, I miss you, too! Someday I’ll have more time. In the meantime, gotta do the time.

  • Wonderful post!  Winter is beautiful in her simplicity, and you have cartured this here…

  • I miss the snow too. I used to live in Camden!! I so loved Maine. I love all the color you used inside your house. Wish I wasn’t in a rental…I would do the same thing… use bold, vibrant colors that make me feel alive!!

  • ya did it again…

i could tell you that this midday, there are clouds shrouding my spanish skies, but you´ve helped me notice the mountains peaking far above.

    I Love Julieperson days :)

  • Wow. I love the snow on the hydrangeas. They are my favorite.

I’m in love with your home.  It’s so beautiful and full of life and creativity. It’s inspiring!

ryc – lol…I’m the same – loved Ramona as a kid but now I cringe….Junnie B Jones is even worse if that’s possible!

    :)

  • What a wonderful life.

  • Thank you so much for a glimpse of winter.  I am missing it so much this year.  The weather here is so strange, so brown and muddy and bleak.  If this is what Winter is like in the South is like I could never move there.

  • I always love your entries and your photos.  May I ask what kind of camera you use for your photos?  Brand name and model . . . I’m extremely curious!

  • gorgeous words and pictures!

  • I’m speechless over this post…the bones of summer…..achingly beautiful…such poingnant words to go with just gorgeous photos!

Your ice crystals on the windows are staggeringly beautiful! That touched something very deep and old inside me….

    Thank you, Julie!

  • Your photos make me want to weep, they are amazing!!!

We have had an incredibly mild winter, you are making me miss bad weather :)

  • sigh

  • What is your background? You blogs are always a work of art.

  • You’re making me miss the winter that never was here in Kansas. :( Global warming is knocking at our darned door this year. It makes no sense. RYC: Hey, if stuffed, scrumptious mushrooms were part of the deal, I’d have one of those “parties” every week! ;)

  • Are we not blessed in so many ways.  Just to be allowed to be in the presence of such beauty is a gift that many don’t take the time to appreciate.  Thank you for drawing my attention back to it

  • Beautiful pictures! I found you through Phoebe (phoebe.gleeson.us) via my blog post on moving to Maine, which can be found here: http://naturalattachment.blogspot.com/2006/01/yay-snow-and-moving-to-maine.html

  • These are beautiful, and I love the quotation.
